Originally conceived as a set of piano compositions in 2021, Silhouette took shape in early 2022 at Kerr’s studio in Delray Beach, FL, where Bedal and Kerr spent a week tracking keyboards, Wurlitzer, bass, guitars and drums. Additional sessions in September at Kerr’s home studio expanded the sonic palette, followed by a trip to film composer Adam Robl’s space in South Miami, where they together layered synths and re-amped textures. Bedal later brought in longtime collaborator Caroline Davis, recording alto saxophone and flute at Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn with engineer Dan Pierson. After tracking saxophone and flute, Bedal enlisted Steve Pardo to anchor the low end on bass clarinet, adding rich textural counterpoint from his home studio in Nashville. The final pieces fell into place with Katie Ernst’s ethereal vocals on "Lighthouse" and Will Miller’s expressive flugelhorn on "Plume", seamlessly blending with Davis’ lines.
